Terms of use
Last updated 12 September 2026
Tare is currently free and in private testing. These terms are deliberately short, and they will be replaced with fuller ones before Tare is ever sold.
Who you are agreeing with
Tare is provided by Timothy Lauren Wickens, contactable at support@tare.cooking. The full postal details are in the Impressum. Using Tare means accepting what is written here.
Your account
You need an account to use Tare, and you are responsible for keeping your password to yourself. Tell us at support@tare.cooking if you think somebody else has got into your account.
One person, one account. Do not share an account with someone — invite them to your cookbook instead, which is what cookbooks are for.
You need to be at least 16 to have an account. That is the age at which, in Germany, somebody can agree to this sort of thing for themselves. A household can of course cook from one cookbook together — the age is about whose name the account is in.
Your recipes are yours
Everything you put into Tare stays yours. We do not claim ownership of it, we do not use it to train anything, and we do not show it to anyone outside the cookbooks you put it in.
We store and display your content only so that Tare can work — showing it back to you and to the people you have invited into a shared cookbook. You can take it out or delete it at any time.
Nothing you bring into Tare is ever deleted or held back from you: the whole cookbook is yours to export at any time, whatever you pay. A free cookbook opens fifty recipes; the rest wait on the shelf, listed by name. A free cookbook seats six people. There is nothing to buy yet: when a subscription exists, it will open every recipe on the shelf and seat twenty people, and these terms will say so, with the price, before anyone is asked to pay.
A word about recipes from websites. When you capture a recipe, you are responsible for what you do with it. A list of ingredients is generally not protected by copyright, but the words somebody wrote around it and the photographs they took usually are. Keeping a captured recipe for your own cooking is ordinary; republishing somebody's writing or photographs as your own is not, and Tare is not a tool for that.
If you are a recipe author or publisher and believe something in Tare should not be there, write to support@tare.cooking and we will look at it.
What you may not do
- Use Tare for anything unlawful, or to store anything unlawful.
- Upload content that infringes somebody else's rights.
- Attempt to break into, overload, or work around the limits of the service, or access another person's account or cookbook.
- Resell or redistribute the service.
If you do any of these we may suspend or close the account. Where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.
What Tare does not promise
Tare is free and in testing, and it is provided as it is. We do not guarantee that it will always be available, that it will never lose data, or that every recipe will be read from every website correctly — recipe pages vary enormously and some of them defeat it.
Keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose. The Download my data option in the app, under the button in the top-right corner, exists for exactly this.
Tare scales recipes and converts between units as carefully as it can, and it tells you when it has rounded something. It is a kitchen aid and not a professional instrument. Use your own judgement, particularly where it matters — baking, allergens, and anything you are cooking for someone else.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited under the applicable law. Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, liability for a free service is limited to intent and gross negligence.
Ending it
You can stop using Tare whenever you want, and delete your account with it — see delete your account. We may close the service, or your account, with reasonable notice, and we will give you the chance to export your recipes before we do.
Changes
These terms will change, particularly when Tare stops being free. The date at the top will change with them, and anything significant will be told to you in the app rather than left here for you to find.
Law
German law applies. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory rules of the country you live in.
