Delete your Tare account
Last updated 23 September 2026
You can delete your Tare account — the recipe app published by Timothy Lauren Wickens — and everything stored in it, at any time. There are two ways to do it — one inside the app, and one that needs nothing but email. There is nothing to cancel first. Tare has no subscription or paid plan yet; nothing can be bought, so nothing is being charged.
Delete it yourself, in the app
- Open Tare.
- Tap the two-people button in the top-right corner (it is labelled Your cookbook).
- Scroll to the bottom.
- Tap Delete my account.
If you signed up but have not yet made or joined a cookbook, the same Delete my account link is at the bottom of the first screen you see.
This takes effect immediately.
Ask us to delete it
If you have uninstalled Tare, changed phone, or would simply rather not do it yourself, email us and we will delete the account for you.
Write from the email address the account uses, and say that you want your account deleted. We will check that the request is really from you, delete the account, and reply to confirm it is done.
Before you delete: take your recipes with you
Deleting is immediate and cannot be undone. If you want to keep what you have written, export it first — open Tare, tap the two-people button in the top-right corner, and choose Download my data. That writes everything you have to one file, in a folder you choose on your phone.
How long it takes
Deleting from inside the app happens straight away. Ordinary backups of the database may hold a copy for a short period before they roll over; nothing is kept on purpose after deletion. The only things that stay are the ones listed under Kept below, and they stay because they belong to a cookbook rather than to you. Any email you exchanged with support is kept for a reasonable period afterwards, as the privacy policy says.
Requests sent to support@tare.cooking are actioned within 30 days, and usually within a few days. Tare is run by one person, so 30 days is the promise; in practice it is nearly always much faster. We will email you when it is done.
What deleting your account actually does
Most of this is what you would expect. One part of it surprises people, so it is written out plainly rather than buried.
Deleted, permanently
- Your account, and with it the password on it or the link to the Google account you signed in with.
- Your profile — your email address and your display name.
- The record of which plan your account was on, if there was one.
- Every cook's note you have written.
- Every recipe you have starred as a favourite.
- The notification switches and push token for every phone you turned notifications on with, and any notification waiting to be sent to you.
- Everything Tare had saved on your phone, including recipes stored for use offline, when you delete from inside the app. If you ask by email instead, that copy is on a phone we cannot reach; uninstalling Tare removes it.
- Any cookbook that nobody else is in — together with every recipe, photograph, planned meal and shopping-list line inside it. Photographs Tare holds are removed from its storage. Where a captured recipe carried only the address of a picture on somebody else's website, that address goes with the recipe — the picture itself was never Tare's, and Tare cannot remove it from the website it belongs to.
Kept, because it belongs to a cookbook rather than to you
- A cookbook other people share stays. You are removed from it properly, so nobody else is stranded. If you were its owner, the longest-standing remaining member becomes the owner.
- Recipes you wrote in a shared cookbook stay, and stop being attributed to you. They belong to the cookbook, not to a person — that is deliberate, so one cook leaving does not empty another cook's book.
- Meals you planned stay on that cookbook's calendar, no longer attributed to you, for the same reason.
If you want a shared cookbook emptied as well as left, that is a different request and we can do it — but everyone else in that cookbook loses those recipes too. Email support@tare.cooking and say so explicitly.
What we do not do on this page
This page will not delete an account from a form, and there is no form on it. An open web page that deleted whatever account matched a typed-in email address would let anyone destroy anyone else's recipes. So deletion is requested here and confirmed by us, or performed by you inside the app where you are already signed in.
